In the multichannel sound installation by Maan Methven and Victor Goemaere, grief for the loss of nature is expressed through a spatial composition. A collective of women’s voices performs a contemporary lament, inspired by traditional mourning songs and experimental sound art. Through spatialization, the voices move through the space and take on a sculptural quality. The work stems from a desire to reintroduce collective mourning into a society in which loss is often processed individually and in silence. Lament for a Burnt Forest proposes mourning as an active and transformative process: a way to not only acknowledge what is disappearing, but also to enter into a more conscious relationship with the world that remains after loss.
