The Song Of Mothers is an immersive soundscape that conveys the patterns and rhythms of lamentation. Laments often accompany the process of mourning with music, song and poetry. The piece is a composition of sounds that draws on the tonality of earth, water, minerals, alongside Hoda’s personal family archives and recordings of lamentations sung by Bakhari women.
This is an invitation to a space of sonic sensation and immersion in an embodiment of loss, where individual and collective memories come together in a practice of healing. Drawing on Hoda Siahtiri’s ongoing research project which engages with the singing practices of Bakhtiari women, the artist explores how grief conveys an embodied practice of care and knowledge sharing.
Sound piece made in collaboration with Manuel Phil. Bischof.
