La Semaine du Son / De Week van de Klank 2025 will take place from 27 January until 2 February in Brussels, and from 3 February to 9 February in Flandres and Wallonia. We warmly invite all artists and researchers to submit their sound related projects for the programme of the festival’s next edition around the theme of Sub Terra!

_______

What goes on underground? When we listen beneath the surface, what kind of sounds arise to our ears? Which roots, presences and networks do we find?

There’s so much happening below that can’t be seen, beyond what is openly shown or revealed. Electromagnetic fields surround us everywhere, there’s layers of history and life beneath our feet, emotion and memory stored deeply within our bodies. How do these vibrate, how do they reveal themselves? How to sonify the unspeakable, how to reveal parts of the archive, how to make the tactile become auditory? How do the visual and auditory reinforce each other?

Deeper listening can help us explore the subconscious, what’s inside of us, the invisible ; energies and movements which seem hidden or silent until something explodes or emerges. Sound often allows us to feel “outside of time”, but at the same time helps us to be in the present moment. Underground communities tend to reflect a particular, time-bound state of mind.

How and where does sound move, which forces operate in concealment? What role can radio and sound (technology) play in the process of revealing? Microphones and speakers are often supposed to remain “unseen” or inaudible even. But, which sound techniques can we help to reveal, explain, visualize, make more accessible to the public?

One of La Semaine du Son’s missions is to reveal what goes on behind the scenes, curtains or technology. By encouraging and facilitating the exchange of ideas, our aim is to help artists and audience meet each other, and to give the audience an insight into the artist’s creative work as well as the process and research behind it.

May the unseen trigger our imagination and receptivity, and let’s find a common meeting ground for these exchanges and encounters!
